Coast Guard Response Boat Self-Righting Test
CoastGuardNews.com Seattle - The Response Boat Medium successfully completes a self-righting test. This new boat, which was delivered to the Coast Guard March 31, is a multi-mission capable boat expected to operate in coastal zones which include inshore and inland waterways and open ocean out to 50 nautical miles, but will routinely operate in shallow water. As an operational Coast Guard asset, it will rapidly respond to any Coast Guard mission on very short notice and will conduct planned patrols and training. It will replace the 41-foot utility boat which has been the workhorse of Coast Guard coastal stations for more than 25 years.

ULTIMATE COAST GUARD BOATS
ULTIMATE COAST GUARD BOATS
www.fountainpowerboats.com Video shot and edited by Bryan M. Liles. This video has been posted with Fountains approval and was provided by fountain to post. BUSINESS AT FULL THROTTLE Although the title on his business card says, "Reggie Fountain, Chief Executive Officer, Chairman of the Board and President," it scarcely touches upon the extent of his actual involvement. Unlike any other CEO in the performance boating industry, Reggie Fountain is hands-on every step of the way. He's as likely to be under a boat covered in fiberglass dust to fine-tune a new bottom design, as he is to be sitting behind his desk pouring over financial statements. Like so many boat builders, Fountain started his company after evaluating the market and coming to the conclusion that he could do it better. History tells that unlike most, Fountain succeeded. For his aforementioned R&D program with Mercury, in 1978 Fountain contracted with Bill Farmer of Excalibur Boats in Sarasota, Florida to use one of Farmer's 31' V-bottoms. As the testing program progressed, Fountain couldn't resist the temptation to tinker with the boat. A little sandpaper on the running surface netted a speed increase. Handcrafted putty strakes improved handling and further modifications on the stern drive height improved acceleration. Before long, Reggie had made so many changes the boat no longer resembled the original. The forerunner to the first Fountain was born. Encouraged by the incredible performance gains, Fountain ...

CHILMARK, MA- Eyewitness Video of Coast Guard Boat House Engulfed in Flames- (07-12-10)
MENEMSHA -- A US Coast Guard building, pier and truck on Martha's Vineyard caught fire and were engulfed in flames this afternoon. The area, including the beach, has been evacuated. The boat house and pier are located at the Coast Guard Station in Menemsha. The fire started at 2:42 this afternoon, Coast Guard Petty Officer Connie Terrell said. It is unclear what started the blaze. The boathouse, pier, a truck and the trailer that carries the station's 25-foot boat caught fire, she said. The boat was in Woods Hole when the fire started. Another 47-foot boat had just gotten underway when the pier caught fire, she said. Local fire departments have responded to the scene and Coast Guard personnel and equipment from other stations, including the Coast Guard Cutter Sanibel out of Woods Hole, are covering the area, Terrell said. There are 22 Coast Guard crew members stationed at Menemsha. There are no reports of injuries and the cause of the fire is not yet known, she said. capecodonline.com

US Coast Guard Suspends Converted Patrol Boat Operations
US Coast Guard Suspends Converted Patrol Boat Operations
Video showing the new converted 123-foot Coast Guard cutters prior to the suspension of the program due to structural problems. The program's operations were suspended following a comprehensive analysis of the 123-foot patrol boat's structure, including metallurgical examination, full-scale testing using an instrumented cutter, laboratory analysis, computer-based structural analysis, and a third party review from the designers of the original hull form. Following the discovery of significant buckling in the structural members underneath a main engine aboard one of the eight cutters, Rear Adm. Dale Gabel, the Coast Guard's chief engineer, personally inspected five more of the 123-foot patrol boats in Key West November 16. He found similar deformations, as well as other signs of hull weaknesses, aboard all five cutters. The Coast Guard's Integrated Deepwater System had originally planned to convert 49 of the service's 110-foot cutters into 123-foot cutters, intending to increase the vessel's annual operational hours to 2500 versus the 110-foot boat standard, which ranges from 1800 to 2200 hours. In June 2005, the Coast Guard stopped its conversion process at eight hulls when it determined the converted cutters lacked adequate capabilities to meet their expanded post 9/11 operational requirements. Following conversion, the 123-foot boats displayed deck cracking and hull deformation and developed shaft alignment problems related to other structural issues. The Coast Guard is ...
